Small Business Saturday is incredibly important to us. As a small business, we are eternally grateful for all of the support we've received from our community over the past few years. CONQUERing is all about empowerment—one of the ways we are committed to that mission is by empowering our community and other small businesses.
We knew that we wanted to dedicate our November collaboration post to Small Business Saturday. This gives us the opportunity to talk about why it's important to us to support local merchants and give the CONQUERing community a chance to share their favorite small businesses.
What is the Meaning of Small Business Saturday?
Small Business Saturday is always the Saturday after Thanksgiving. This year, it falls on November 29, 2025.
It was launched by American Express in 2010 as an attempt to drive holiday shopping to small businesses. The idea was to help small businesses that were still hurting from the 2008 financial crisis. In 2011, the Small Business Administration official signed on as a cosponsor and to this day works with American Express to keep the tradition going.
What are Three Facts About Small Business Saturday?
We checked out the 2025 American Express Shop Small® Impact Study to better understand the impact of Small Business Saturday. Here are three facts to convince you to shop small this holiday season:
- On average, small business owners estimate nearly 20% of their annual revenue will come from this year's Small Business Saturday sales
- 86% of consumers say they are likely to shop small this holiday season
- 76% of consumers agree that small businesses are essential to their community
There are more than 36 million independent businesses in the United States that rely on the support of their local communities to stay afloat. Take this as your sign to check out some local businesses this year!
Why Support Small Business Saturday?
There aren't only benefits for small business owners when you shop local. Check out these five reasons that explain why Small Business Saturday is important:
- Supports Your Community. According to the Chambers Small Business Index, nearly all small business owners agree that community engagement is important. These businesses are committed to hosting community events, donating to local charities, and forming partnerships with other local businesses.
- Stimulates Your Local Economy. When you shop local, the sales tax from your purchases goes back into your community. Taxes can support public schools, parks, roads, sidewalks, and funding of public service workers. It also creates more jobs—when you support small businesses, they are able to grow and hire more workers.
- Helps You Find Unique Gifts. This is vital for holiday shopping. Most small business owners are hand-making their products which means anything you buy is going to be unique. Products are also more likely to be high-quality.
- Keeps Communities Diverse. From introducing different cultures to keeping things from being monotonous, small businesses liven up your community. You wouldn't want to live somewhere that only has chain stores and large corporations.
- Reduces Your Carbon Footprint. Shopping small is also more eco-friendly! In general, small business owners are purchasing locally which requires shorter transportation and fewer resources than big corporations.
This just scratches the surface for why it's important to support Small Business Saturday. Small businesses are the backbone of the US economy—by shopping local, you could be helping a community member keep their dream store open.
