CONQUERing Collaboration: Halloween Costume Ideas

It's October which means the weather is starting to transition, the leaves are falling off of the trees, and the days are getting shorter. It also means that Halloween is right around the corner!

As someone who is a Halloween-enthusiast, I look forward to October every single year. Coming up with creative costume ideas, watching classic Halloween movies, and getting discounted candy the first week of November are some of the best moments of the year.

Not everyone is a fan of the season. Some people find coming up with Halloween costumes to be a daunting task. It can feel like a chore to come up with something creative, make or buy the materials you need, and then shove your costume in the back of the closet never to be seen again.

We decided for this month's collaboration, we wanted to help our readers out there who dread Halloween. We'll share our advice for picking the perfect costume and then share feedback from the CONQUERing Collective on what their Halloween plans are.

What is the Most Popular Costume on Halloween?

A good place to start when deciding what to be for Halloween is thinking about what's going to be popular. You might want to jump on what's trending and wear a costume everyone will understand. If you're someone who likes to make creative costumes and stand out, you might use what's popular to decide what not to be.

There are really two categories that determine what costumes are the most popular on Halloween. The first is what's trending for that year and the second are the classic costumes that are always popular.

The most popular Halloween costumes based on trends will usually be characters from movies, tv shows, video games, etc. that were talked about a lot during the year. This could be a superhero that had a very successful opening at the box office, an animated character from a popular kid's show, or a character from a popular video game. Even internet memes make their way into top costumes depending on how the year is going.

On the other hand, you're guaranteed to see classic characters every year. Some of the classics you might be familiar with—and might influence you—are:

  • Pumpkin
  • Ghost
  • Clown
  • Witch
  • Vampire
  • Black cat
  • Devil & angel
  • Mummy
  • Alien
  • Bat

You might draw inspiration from what's popular to decide what you'll be this year. You could also decide to steer clear and come up with an original creation that will stand out against what's trending.

How to Find the Perfect Halloween Costume?

If you want to steer clear of what's popular, you might still be unsure of what the perfect costume will be. The perfect costume isn't defined by what other people will think (although it does always feel good to get compliments on your costume.) Instead, the perfect costume should allow you to express yourself and feel confident wherever you decide to wear it.

Here are a few things to consider when determining what the perfect Halloween costume is:

  1. How big do you want to go? Part of what makes Halloween costumes daunting is the pressure to stage a full-scale production for one night out. You don't have to break the bank to have the perfect Halloween costume. Assess how much effort you're really willing to put into this and decide what your budget is for the costume.
  2. What themes are you drawn to? You also need to decide what theme you want your costume to fall under. Do you want to do something truly terrifying? Maybe you want to create something so clever that people won't be able to stop talking about it. Do you want to go with what's popular? Figure out what theme you want your costume to fall under and work from there.
  3. Do you already own what you need? A great way to save money on a costume is to make something out of what you already own. A lot of trendy, eye-catching Halloween costumes can actually be made with the clothes you already own. If you're looking for a low-effort costume, this would be a great thing to consider.
  4. Where are you wearing your costume? Personally, I like to have multiple costumes for the weekend. There are different occasions where a Halloween costume might be worn that can influence what you'll be. If it's for an office party, you might want to choose something tame or something that will make your coworkers laugh. If you're going to a costume party hosted by your friends, you might want to put more of an effort in and choose something that will dazzle the partygoers.
  5. What are your comfort levels? October can be a tricky time of year depending on where you live when it comes to the weather. I've experienced Halloweens with snow on the ground and needed to wear a coat or add pieces to a costume I didn't originally think I'd need. Other times, it's been pretty warm and I've wanted to avoid wearing a costume that's super warm. Besides the temperature, you also have to consider what you feel comfortable in. You don't want the festivities to be ruined because your costume is making you uncomfortable.
  6. Are you riding solo or planning with others? Finally, you don't have to come up with a costume all on your own. If you don't want to plan a solo costume, you can grab your BOO for a creative couples costume. You could also grab your best friends and plan a group costume. Working with friends can take some of the burden of deciding what to be for Halloween off of you.

The perfect costume is truly dependent on you. It depends on your taste, your comfort, and what makes you feel confident.

What Should You Wear If You Don't Want to Dress Up?

At the end of the day, if you truly don't want to create a Halloween costume, you don't have to. There are plenty of Halloween-themed looks you can pull together that are still on theme.

You could choose to wear colors that are orange and black. An orange sweater with black pants, or an orange dress with black boots are both great ways to stay in the spirit without committing to a costume.

You could also wear Halloween-themed clothes and accessories. Fun Halloween earrings or a punny Halloween tee are great substitutes when you aren't feeling a full costume.

Go with what you're comfortable with! It's okay to not wear a costume if you don't want to.

What is the CONQUERing Community Being for Halloween?

Photo of customer-made DIY Halloween fidget jewelryIf you still aren't sure what you think you want to be for Halloween, hopefully you can draw some inspiration from the CONQUERing community. We asked the CONQUERing Collective Facebook group to share what they're going to be for Halloween this year and if they were planning to pair any of their favorite pieces of jewelry with their costumes.

Rachel said that she isn't necessarily dressing up herself but her kids are planning to! Her daughter is going to be a shark and her son is going to be a light-up stick figure. She's going to still show her Halloween spirit by wearing her Halloween elements from the Mini Halloween Vessel Collection

Vicki has the same mindset as me and is a believer in having multiple costumes for each "night" of Halloween weekend. She said she's planning to be Batgirl one night and Wednesday Addams the other. She said she's not entirely sure what elements she's going to pair with her outfits but is definitely leaning towards either an Onyx HexBar™ or an Onyx™ ClaraVisa™ element from our Paris Fashion Week collection.

Finally, Lynne share her and Hannah's DIY fidget jewelry they made that is Halloween-themed. Lynne shared a picture of the adorably spooky designs that definitely embody the spirit of Halloween. The picture at the top of this section are the DIY designs the pair made!
