One of the number one things you'll hear from someone who is looking to make changes to their life is the desire to be more organized. It could be wanting to be more organized at work to ensure you're not missing deadlines or decluttering your home to open up space.

Whatever the case may be, getting organized can feel like a daunting task. It's hard to figure out where to start, to find motivation to stay organized, and knowing when it's time to get rid of things you've been holding onto.

This is where we come in. Organizing your life doesn't have to be a years-long, labor-intensive project. We put together five tips that can help you start getting organized today.

How Do I Get Better at Organizing?

Before we share our tips, let's talk about what it means to be organized. You might feel like you just aren't the type of person that's meant to be organized. You probably have a stereotype in mind of what an "organized person" looks like.

This person might be extremely Type A, has labeled storage bins for everything, doesn't have any clutter, and has daily organization habits. While there are people out there like that, you don't have to be a certain type of person to be organized.

To get better at organizing, you first need to decide what organization means to you. It doesn't have to mean spending hundreds of dollars on storage containers or to completely deplete mess from your life. Figure out what makes you feel organized and work from their to develop your own definition.

You also need to uncover your motivation for wanting to be organized. Is it just a personal goal you have? Are you expecting guests and want your home to feel organized? Do you feel cluttered? Are you just trying to save time? Whatever your motivation is, it can help you establish a clear goal for wanting to get organized.

Finally, you need to find systems that work for you. Figure out a system that helps you keep track of everything and is easy to maintain. Once you develop organizational methods that are catered to you, staying organized won't feel impossible.

Now that you have a better idea of how you can be better at organization, let's talk about some tips we have for staying organized every day.

Remember, what works for you might not be what works for someone else. There are plenty of other tips you can try if these tips don't resonate with you.

Here are five organization tips that we recommend:

  1. Start by decluttering. One of the biggest hurdles of being organized is working through all of the stuff you've accumulated. Don't try to tackle everything at once. Start with one small area and start getting rid of things you no longer use. If things are in good shape, you could consider selling them to make some extra cash as well! Decluttering opens up space and can make organizing what you have left a bit easier.
  2. Break organization into chunks. Tackling everything at once can leave you feeling overwhelmed and discouraged. Start with one area and then work your way through the space you're organizing. You also don't need to accomplish this in one day. You could take several weekends to work on different chunks until you finish.
  3. Develop your own system. As we mentioned above, developing systems that are catered to you will be an organizational game changer. You don't have to put everything in a box or a drawer that's clearly labeled. As long as you have a system where everything has a place and you know how to find things, that's all that really matters.
  4. Don't put off putting things away. Not putting things away in their respective places can immediately cause clutter. Whether it's dishes, clothes, mail, or shoes, make it a practice to put things away as soon as you're done using them.
  5. Implement organization into your daily routine. Finally, there are things you can do in your daily routine to stay organized. Whether it's making your bed in the morning or removing clutter from your surfaces at the end of the day, incorporating small organizational activities into your daily routine can help you maintain an organized space.

There are many other methods you can try to start organizing! It's okay to try out different ideas to see what works for you. As long as you figure out what works for you, that's all that really matters.
